We often provide operational training courses to electricians to bring their knowledge up to the level required to safely operate High Voltage switchgear. After the courses the staff are formally identified as AP’s All too often however these staff never get to operate the switchgear for many years and they loose their confidence in the intricacies of the management of the site. Although they are often able to operate a HV circuit breaker or disconnect or etc they do not have a firm understanding of the overall effect of the operations on the rest of the site or of the safety implications for work on site. Our favoured approach is for all work on the HV system to be passed to ourselves so that our professional High Voltage engineers can carry out the work ourselves but we do recognised that many companies would not be able or willing to do this and for these companies we can offer a range of support services. We can provide engineers on a 24x7 basis on site to be instantly available in the event of a power outage or incident. We can also provide staff on a call out basis to attend site within a specified period of time. However we do recognise that if you have staff on site that can carry out first line operations then in many cases they can resolve the immediate effects of a problem by operating switches to isolate or restore supplies and they can then be supported by other staff brought in specifically to deal with the events. In order to support your staff on site we can offer a 24x7 control function. In this our professional control engineers will be on call to discuss the site events with you and then to work with you to decide on a course of switching operations. They will do this over a telephone conversation and will be able to access an approved copy of a network diagram and also see site information. This will be provided by an internet application that allows approved control staff to “dress” a diagrammatic representation of the site to the current state and then to issue switching instructions to staff. This system also allows the control engineer to access other site specific information to allow him to provide technical assistance to the staff on site as he will have photographs of all of the switches and copies of all site operational procedures, method statements and safety rules and documentation available over the internet. This virtual control capability offers a cost effective way of providing the essential first line support that your on site staff have to provide by giving them confidence and assistance. This system is similar to the systems in use by the Distribution Network operators when the control the public 11kV electrical network. One of our professional engineers will work with you to decide the level of support needed and to collect the data needed to manage the system and hw will also be responsible for training your AP’s and our control engineers on the dedicated procedures to be used on site. After every even that needs the control engineer he will carry out a short operational review to see if there are any lessons to be leant from the events and strive to continually improve the quality of the service. |
